In the 20th century, Many renowned filmmakers have tried to portray Mahatma Gandhi on the big screen. Today, October 2nd is his birthday, here is the list of five top movies that were made on him. The list is not based on any rankings each movie had its own strong suit, but Richard Attenborough's Ben Kingsley starred  Gandhi will always be on top.
 
Gandhi, the leader of India’s independence movement, was not just the biggest figure in that movement. He also became the face of it to people outside India.  His philosophy and non-violent protests helped demolish the most powerful empire on earth.

The 1982 film Gandhi catapulted a little-known British actor, Ben Kingsley, to stardom. The movie was the first serious attempt to portray the great man on screen. This epic portrayal of Mohandas Gandhi was a dream project for Attenborough, With an optimistic performance by Kingsley and sharp direction by Attenborough, Gandhi was a huge commercial and critical success. It won eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor. This is the definitive Mahatma Gandhi film.

Directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, Gandhi My Father explores the complex relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his son Harilal Gandhi. Based on Harilal’s biography, Gandhi My Father was praised for its direction and performances. It was especially applauded for Darshan Jariwala's portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi. The film received favorable reviews and went on to win three National Film Awards.

Hey Ram was Kamal Haasan’s directorial debut. The film starred Haasan and Shah Rukh Khan, two of the biggest superstars in Indian cinema. The title of the film is derived from Gandhi’s dying words: “Hey Ram”. This film was about the political and religious tensions surrounding the Partition and a story of two friends from different backgrounds. Naseeruddin Shah portrayed Gandhi which was an astonishing performance.

The film that made Gandhi’s philosophy and ideas palatable to the youth of India were Lage Raho Munna Bhai. The movie gave Gandhism a tapori spin and called it Gandhigiri. Although Mahatma in the film was only a hallucination of the gangster Munna Bhai, he still managed to transform him from a criminal to a nonviolent devotee. This movie helped to represent the ideas of Gandhi in such a way that was easily understood by the young Indians

Shyam Benegal directed this film based on Mahatma Gandhi’s time in South Africa when he was a barrister. This came before he came to India and joined the independence movement. Director Shyam Benegal and his team have created a masterpiece in this film. It is well-known that Gandhi spent years in South Africa and those years changed his character to overthrow the British empire.
